Oil and gas experts gather for ‘Knowledge’ conferenceSpecialists from across the globe meet in Aberdeen to discuss the challenges facing knowledge and information management in the Energy industry
Oil & Gas IQ hosted the Knowledge and Information Management (KIM) conference for oil and gas professionals [Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 April] at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa in Aberdeen.
Nigel Barnes principal consultant and Colin Balchin founder of Aberdeen-based Adept Knowledge Management spoke on ‘Transforming knowledge to improve decision making in project and asset management’.
Mr Balchin is a leading industry expert who helps organisations understand risk management and how they can improve the performance of people and processes through transfer of learning. He said: “Knowledge is a mixture of intelligence and experience, using that knowledge is what enables business leaders to make successful decisions and is a valuable asset for any organisation. Good information management is essential in business for the capture of knowledge, with 3D technology potentially revolutionising how information management systems function.”
This year’s programme included new case studies from the industry's most progressive thinkers including Andy Boyd, knowledge sharing team lead for Shell UK projects and technology on ‘How to manage knowledge transfer to ensure you retain decades worth of experience for the future workforce’. Alan Thompson, global knowledge manager at PSN spoke on ‘Motivating knowledge workers towards a sustainable knowledge sharing culture in a global organisation’.
Susan Rosenbaum, director of knowledge management at Schlumberger offered her insights as to how she sees knowledge management developing at Schlumberger and the wider oil and gas industry in the years ahead. She commented: “I think that knowledge management will continue to play an important role in the oil and gas industry in the future. With the ever-increasing technical challenges that we face in our business, the sharing of technical knowledge and technical know-how will be increasingly critical.”
Also in attendance were representatives from ADDAX Petroleum, Baker Hughes, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd., Statoil, Subsea 7 and Total EP.
