gabbyloganSports presenter Gabby Logan is to host this year’s Northern Star Business Awards on September 23.

Gabby, presenter of BBC’s Inside Sport and a Sunday morning show on Radio 5 Live, is married to Scottish rugby star Kenny Logan and is herself no stranger to awards ceremonies having twice been named Sports Presenter of the Year.

“I’m delighted to be hosting Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce’s seventh Northern Star Business Awards this year,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see so many organisations coming together, from a range of different sectors and sizes, to celebrate success in North-east Scotland.

“The last year has been a tough one for many companies but this event showcases how innovation and best operating practice can result in outstanding achievements.

“Once again, the awards ceremony is expected to be the highlight of the city’s business calendar and I’m sure will motivate other companies to set new goals for themselves.”

The 2010 Awards were launched on March 24 at a ceremony at Skene House Hotel attended by sponsors, previous winners and finalists and some of the entrants for this year’s awards.

The Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce event, which will once again be held at the Press & Journal Arena at the AECC, is expected to bring in around 1000 guests for the third year in a row making it one of the biggest events in Scotland’s business calendar.

Nominations have now opened and this year there are 14 categories covering all aspects of business practice. They are:

  • Student Placement
  • Renewable Energy
  • Sustainability
  • Achievement in Internationalisation
  • Commitment to People Development
  • Socially Responsible Company of the Year
  • Best Use of ICT
  • Excellence in Customer Service
  • Commitment to Research & Development
  • Rising Star
  • Lifetime Achievement
  • Small Overall Business of the Year
  • Medium Overall Business of the Year
  • Large Overall Business of the Year

Closing date for the nominations is May 21 and the awards have already attracted entries from some of the brightest and best of companies of all sizes and across all sectors.

A new Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented this year for the first time with the award winner being selected by the Chamber’s President and Chief Executive in conjunction with key awards partners and with the category sponsor Aberdeen City Council.

The 2010 awards are supported by Principal sponsor, The Robert Gordon University Business School and Supporting sponsor, Aberdeen Harbour. Other category sponsors who have confirmed their support are Aberdeenshire Council, Fergus & Glover, bmi, Aberdeen City Council, the Scottish European Green Energy Centre and Confiance. Associated sponsors include Northsound, AECC, Cameron Presentations, The Press & Journal and XIC.

Chamber Chief Executive Robert Collier said that the stature and prestige of the awards grows from year to year.

“These awards recognise and celebrate achievement and that’s particularly significant coming at the tail end of a downturn. Against this background, some of our North-east businesses have achieved remarkable resilience, have demonstrated real commitment to research and development, entered new markets and developed new products, while not forgetting the importance of significant areas of company culture such as people development, customer service and CSR.

“Those are true measures of business success and we are delighted that this awards ceremony will recognise and applaud the strength and success of business in the North-east.”

Finalists in this year’s Northern Star Awards will also have the chance to win the £50,000 top award in the British Chambers of Commerce National Awards in London later this year.
