A summer of success for Aberdeen academic

An academic at Robert Gordon University has been awarded two prestigious accolades in recognition of his work and contribution to the pharmaceutical profession.

Derek Stewart, who works at the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, has been appointed Professor of Pharmacy Practice. In the same short space of time, he has been announced as the winner of the Pharmacy Practice Research Trust (PPRT) 2011 Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Conference Practice Research Award.

The selection process for professorship at the university is rigorous and demanding, involving submission of a comprehensive CV, a detailed plan of future research strategy as well as academic references from internationally respected academics and practitioners in the field. Derek was the only member of staff to be made Professor in this year’s round of promotions.

The RPS Conference Practice Research Award is presented by the PPRT to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of pharmacy practice research and has the potential to become a leader in the field. Professor Stewart has been selected in recognition of his research which has focused on the pharmacist prescriber. The award will be presented at the RPS conference to be held on Monday 12 September at Goldsmiths, the University of London, where he will deliver a plenary lecture on his prize-winning research.

The lecture will stress the importance of robust pharmacy practice research as a positive contribution to evidenced-based practice, strategic developments and placing the pharmacist prescriber within the hierarchy of modern healthcare practice.

Professor Stewart, who worked initially in secondary care prior to joining Robert Gordon University to pursue an academic pharmacy career said: “I am delighted to be promoted to Professor and to receive the Pharmacy Practice Research Trust award in recognition of my contribution to research. I am fortunate to work with so many talented colleagues who all share in these accolades.”

Professor Donald Cairns, Acting Head of the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences said: “This is a great result for the School and the University. Derek has established himself as an internationally respected figure in Pharmacy Practice research and these awards are very well deserved. “

PPRT Chairman, Marshall Davies, who will be presenting the award at the RPS Conference said: “Professor Stewart’s research into pharmacist prescribing from a range of perspectives including the pharmacy profession, policy makers and patients and public has shown it to be a dynamic and rapidly changing area to investigate. His research is informing and having an impact on professional policy and practice making him a deserving recipient of this award.”
