ABERDEEN – Rebel forces are reportedly preparing for an assault on the Gaddafi held town of Bani Walid.

According to AKE sources on the ground it remains unclear whether significant numbers of pro-Gaddafi troops were defending the town.

If the rebels believe it to be poorly defended an offensive may become a more attractive option.

The move comes after the reported collapse of talks aimed at persuading loyalist troops to surrender.

It remains unclear whether the rebels will attempt to restart negotiations, given their apparent reluctance to carry out further attacks on the remaining towns controlled by pro-Gaddafi troops.

Meanwhile, a large convoy of Libyan armoured vehicles, escorted by the Nigerien military reportedly arrived in the Niger desert town of Agadez late on 5 September,

The convoy reportedly contained between 200 and 250 Libyan military vehicles and included officers from Libya’s southern army battalions.

Unconfirmed reports claim that Gaddafi and his son Saif al-Islam were considering joining the convoy, en route to Burkina Faso, which has reportedly offered Gaddafi asylum.

However, the exact whereabouts of Gaddafi currently remain unclear. The National Transitional Council may be willing to accept a deal that sees Gaddafi leave in order to bring the ongoing conflict to an end, which would allow it to focus on the project of rebuilding the country.

However, they have previously stated they would like to see the former dictator tried for crimes committed against his own people.
