ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT SUPPORTS BRITISH GARDEN “CONSERVANCY ENDOWMENT PROJECT” IN NEW YORK

Amongst others, Martin Gilbert, CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management PLC will be honoured at a gala dinner this evening in New York, organised by the British Memorial Garden Trust Inc, in recognition of his contribution to Global Corporate Leadership.

This evening’s dinner is part of an ongoing program to raise the US$4 million still needed to secure the British Garden’s future and maintenance through a conservancy endowment programme.

The British Garden at Hanover Square (website at www.britishgarden.org) in lower Manhattan was created to serve as a memorial for the British subjects who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11, with HRH The Prince of Wales as Royal Patron. It was opened by HM The Queen in July 2010 on her visit to New York.

In letters to British Garden directors published in the Gala programme this evening, British and American civic leaders voiced their support for the Garden’s ongoing initiative to raise funds to ensure its maintenance for perpetuity. They include “wholehearted” support from the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, Mayor of London Boris Johnson who cites the conservancy as a “worthwhile cause” and support from New York’s Mayor Bloomberg amongst others. HRH The Prince of Wales says of the Garden “it provides not only a poignant reminder of those who so tragically lost their lives on that terrible day, but also a place for private reflection in the midst of one of the world’s most vibrant cities.”

The dinner is among a series of events marking the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks and organisers will welcome over 400 guests from the Anglo-American community in New York. Other British Garden honourees of the night include Tom Hooper (Director of The King’s Speech), who will be awarded The Atlantic Award for Cultural Relations. Also Captain Guy Disney will be awarded the McGarahan Award for Heroism and Michael Spencer, CEO of ICAP will also be honoured for his role in Global Corporate Leadership. Governor Jeb Bush will make the keynote speech.

Commenting on being honoured and the conservancy programme, CEO Martin Gilbert says, “Our roots as a investment business go back a hundred years between Scotland and North America. I am very touched personally to be honoured, but also we as a group are delighted to remain involved with the Garden and help raise its profile with the financial and professional community to help secure its conservancy. We look forward to working with others to help ensure the Garden’s endowment for perpetuity.”

The British Garden at Hanover Square is registered as the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization in the United States. Tax ID: 11-3681365.
