Aberdeen IT specialist Skibo Technologies launches computer forensics serviceAberdeen IT specialists Skibo Technologies Ltd (Skibo) has launched a new computer forensics service to aid businesses owners who fear that the security of their electronic data has been compromised. Skibo has set up the service in response to a growing number of requests from companies asking for help in investigating the suspected inappropriate use of IT equipment and the commercially sensitive information stored on it. Specialist engineers who have been working with Skibo in the general IT security field for many years have undertaken intensive training to gain accreditation to industry standards recognised by courts and law enforcement bodies around the world.
Skibo managing director Mark Mair says, “We live in an electronic age where we work, collaborate and socialise using computers, smart phones, and social networking sites. In many ways companies are only waking up to the benefits and, more importantly, the threats that this brings.
“In the past, copying company data would have involved standing at a photocopier and copying paper-based documents. Now with the click of a mouse, vast quantities of company information can be copied, sent, deleted or otherwise misused.”
Engineers linked to the new forensics service can carry out full system audits and can conduct forensic examinations of electronic devices and data sources to identify where breaches may have taken place. The results of the examination can be used as evidence in criminal and civil court proceedings. Skibo can also offer security advice to stop future breaches, and suggest policies and procedures to mitigate against data leaks.
Mr Mair adds, “We are more often than not called in by clients when there has been suspicion of a breach and the client is looking for proof. In these cases early intervention is always the preferred option.
“The critical aspect of any forensic investigation, whether electronic or not, is to secure electronic devices and data sources that are relevant to the suspected breach. Our engineers have had extensive training in how to go about conducting an investigation and how to capture evidence. It is important that evidence is captured in a manner that is acceptable to the courts, as more cases are lost on procedural errors in capturing data than on the evidence itself.”
