Aberdeen schoolboy achieves highest level for Cambridge Pre-U Economics

Robert Gordon’s College pupil Mark Diamond is one of nine pupils in the UK to achieve a D1 (highest possible level) in his Cambridge Pre-U Economics exam.

Mark Diamond relocated to Aberdeen in 2010 where he joined Robert Gordon’s College for his final school year in S6. He has seen great achievements in his academic studies where he also gained A’s in Maths and German. Mark is equally successful in sport where he competes as a triathlete training between 10 and 14 times a week, is a football referee and also a linesman in the Highland League. Mark is now en-route to St Andrews University where he is studying Economics with German.

Teacher Mrs Jackie Farquhar says “Mark has a keen interest in this area and has worked very hard to achieve this grade. Further to the award he was part of the Gordon’s team that were runners up in the first round of the eleventh annual Target Two Point Zero – Bank of England and The Times Interest Rate Challenge where 300 teams across the UK competed”.

Mark himself says “I was only at Robert Gordon's for Sixth year but I settled in quickly and thoroughly enjoyed my last year at school. I worked extremely hard at the end of last year and I'm delighted with the results that I got, and am now looking forward to a new start at St Andrews this September”.

Head of College, Mr Hugh Ouston adds “We are delighted for Mark who has received just reward for his hard work not only at exam time but throughout the year. We enjoyed welcoming him to our school family for his final year of school and helping to prepare him for his University life”.

Robert Gordon’s College have over 180 pupils studying Business Education subjects at certificate level with many pupils going on to study business related courses at University. The Business Studies and Economics department have seen great success in recent years with former pupil Alexander Taylor who achieved the highest mark in Scotland for Higher Business Management Studies (97%) last year and current pupil Sam Povey (S5) who is regularly highly commended for economics essays in national competitions.
