Aberdeen Sports Village to celebrate millionth visitorAberdeen Sports Village opened its doors to great acclaim on 24 August 2009 and is now about to celebrate the huge accolade of its one millionth visitor. The state-of-the-art facility, a joint project between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland, will present a prize to the person who brings its visitor number to 1 million– a figure it is anticipated will be reached on Wednesday June 1 around 12pm. The lucky visitor will receive an array of gifts including a round of golf for four people at Murcar Golf Club, Preen Beauty vouchers, gym membership and loads more. The gifts will be presented by Scotland rugby internationalist Ruaridh Jackson - the Glasgow Warriors player who kicked the winning penalty against Samoa at Pittodrie Stadium last November. ASV is one of the best sporting facilities in Scotland and has proved a hit with users from across the north-east. The Sports Village has been heavily praised by both visitors and users alike for its contribution in providing first class facilities and enhancing opportunities for the community. AFC youth coach Lenny Taylor has already seen a huge improvement in his squads due to the 3rd generation full size indoor pitch, and says “tremendous positives have accrued to all our seven youth academy teams ,from U10’s to U17’s through being able to train indoors, on a first class, full sized indoor football playing surface.” The city of Aberdeen has also benefited from international events and visits from inspirational sports professionals since the arrival of the Sports Village. Just this weekend past the Scotland Netball team took on Sri Lanka for the first time in Aberdeen. Olympic medal winners Alan Wells, Jason Gardner and Brian Whittle have visited to inspire young athletes. Jason Gardner described the Sports Village as ‘world class’ when he visited with Denis Law for the official launch. David Beattie, CEO of Aberdeen Sports Village, said “We have been overwhelmed by the number of users from across the entire community who regularly use the Village for sport and exercise and we aim to continue to work with our partners to expand the range of opportunities and services we offer. “With over 6,000 members and waiting lists in many of the areas within the Sports Village this is a clear indication of the demand there is for a facility of this kind, which can cater for everyone from the elite performance athletes through to those simply wanting to reach or maintain general levels of health and fitness.” 172 views |
