Aberdeen University – Come Here, Go Anywhere!

Aberdeen University History of Art students present an exhibition based on Soviet Poster Art.

Wednesday, 14th December, 2011

James Mackay Hall, King’s College Conference Centre, University of Aberdeen

Third year History of Art Honours students are curators and artists as they exhibit their Soviet avant-garde inspired posters. “I hope that these practical skills will be of use to the students in future, after they finish their studies,” says Dr. Amy Bryzgel, lecturer for the course.

Students were given the assignment to create posters in the style of Soviet avant-garde poster artists, such as El Lissitzky, Gustav Klucis and Alexander Rodchenko. The students’ posters were designed to advertise aspects of the university. During this exercise they arrived at the following question:

“Can the style of Soviet advertising be taken out of its context and used in contemporary advertising?”

This question forms the basis of the exhibition.

Students are divided. Some support that the style can still be an effective format for advertising. Others argue that the negative connotations of Soviet propaganda still resonate within the style.

Join the students in this debate.

The exhibition is free and will open to the public on Wednesday December 14th in the James MacKay Hall, King's College Conference Centre. The posters will remain on display until the 1st of March 2012.
