Aberdeen’s got talent

Rising investment is business is a positive sign that confidence is returning to the North-east – bringing with it new recruitment opportunities and increased need for a skilled workforce.

Helping employers to recruit staff in a competitive market – then retain them once they’ve got them – is the theme of Aberdeen’s Got Talent, the next in the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast series.

Campbell Urquhart, MD of the Urquhart Partnership, will give an update of the current situation and will highlight the key areas businesses should focus on to improve their chances of attracting a first rate workforce will also highlight some of the pitfalls facing employers; Neil Carrington, MD of Bon Accord Employment Services will talk about some of the new legislation and the importance of treating staff fairly if you want to keep them and David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, will give an overview of the independent review he is jointly leading into workplace sickness absence, which was commissioned earlier this year by the UK Government.

Chaired by Ian Ord of Fifth Ring, the event’s focus on HR reflects the importance which an increasing number of companies place on employment issues. With the number of tribunals doubling in recent years, employers are becoming increasing concerned about the implications and the high costs they would face if they lost a case. Last year, the most expensive discrimination payout was for a disability case which saw the employer pay out £730,000 to the claimant; the second highest was a £440,000 in a sex discrimination case.

The event, which is open to members and non-members, will be held at the Airport Thistle Hotel on Wednesday, August 24 from 7-9a.m. Booking is essential, online at www.agcc.co.uk/events or by calling the Events Team on (01224) 343901/343922.
