Aberdeenshire Council appoints new Director of Education, Learning & Leisure

Maria Walker has been appointed as the new Director of Education, Learning and Leisure for Aberdeenshire Council.

Maria is currently Depute Director of Education and Children’s Services at Perth & Kinross Council where she has held a number of different roles within education and cultural services since 1996.

Welcoming Maria to Aberdeenshire Council’s senior management team, Chief Executive Colin Mackenzie said: “Maria brings many excellent qualities to the role of Director. She has a strong awareness of the pressures facing local government, an enthusiasm for working with people to find local solutions and is keen to engage with employees and parents to take forward the service.

“I feel that she will make a strong addition to our senior management team.”

Maria was educated in Aberdeen and has pursued separate successful careers in both teaching and community work. She has held a number of different positions at Perth & Kinross Council and at Tayside Regional Council.

She said: “Having been educated in Aberdeen I have always felt a close affection for the area. I know the area very well and am delighted to be able to move back. This is a chance for me to be a Director in a successful organisation and I am looking forward to working with colleagues and to build a legacy for the service.”

Maria is expected to take up her new position at Aberdeenshire Council in early summer.
