ABERMED RECRUITS NHS AND ROYAL MAIL MEDICAL ADVISOROccupational health provider, Abermed, has strengthened its clinical team by appointing Dr Steve Boorman as medical director for UK occupational health services, with a remit to maintain, develop and improve Abermed’s clinical occupational health services. Dr Steve Boorman, a widely recognised occupational health consultant, has advised the Government and NHS. He was chief medical officer and director health and safety for the Royal Mail. His arrival comes at a pivotal time, as occupational health is increasingly acknowledged as vital to improving the health of the UK’s working population.
James Miller, chairman at Abermed, said: “Dr Boorman’s unrivalled experience in occupational health will greatly benefit all of our clients. He combines a wealth of expertise with genuine charisma. We’re delighted to welcome a colleague at the top of his profession.”
Dr Boorman has enjoyed an exceptional career in occupational health. He spent more than 20 years at the Royal Mail Group, advising UK public service giants on health, safety, environment and social policy. In 2009, he was appointed to lead the review of NHS workforce health and wellbeing. The conclusions of the independent review, delivered to the Health Minister in November 2009, were quickly adopted by the Department of Health. Dr Boorman’s recommendations, which linked staff health and wellbeing to organisational performance and patient outcomes, continue to act as a foundation to the Department of Health Workforce Directorate’s key priorities.
Dr Boorman has been chief examiner to the Faculty of Occupational Medicine’s Diploma Examination since 1998, has an honorary senior clinical lecturer’s appointment to the Institute of Occupational Health in Birmingham and is an ex-president of the Royal Society of Medicine’s occupational medicine section. He served as an appointed Appeal Board Referee under the Merchant Shipping Regulations for more than 15 years. Dr Boorman is on the board of the workplace strand of the Department of Health’s Responsibility Deal and was heavily involved in its predecessor, The Coalition for Better Health. Over the last ten years he has worked closely with the Departments of Health and Work and Pensions, contributing currently to Professor Malcolm Harrington’s review of the Work Capability Assessment. Dr Boorman’s passion for public health led to an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing. He also boasts Honorary Fellowships from the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and Royal College of Physicians. He has presented on occupational health, safety and CSR on a global basis and regularly lectures on professional courses.
Dr Boorman said: “I am delighted to join Abermed at an exciting stage in its growth. It already has a strong clinical team. Together, we have opportunity to build on Abermed’s diverse client and customer base to deliver excellent occupational health services. I can’t wait to get started.” 199 views
