ACSEF Planning Workshop – new EVENING event announced to support the current series!

Join a workshop – at no cost.

"How to get the best out of the new planning system”

If you haven’t been on this workshop before

If you are interested in how planning can contribute to making better places, better quality of life and sustainable economic growth, this event is for you.

If you have already attended a workshop

Most delegates on the previous series said that the value of the workshops lay in exchanging views with different people involved in the planning system so, if you have already been on a workshop, this is a perfect opportunity for you to engage with a new group of stakeholders.  It will cost you nothing but time – and the half-day investment will be time well spent.

The next series of workshops will be held on the following dates:

All workshops from 12:30pm to 4.30pm – including buffet lunch

Friday 5 November 2010                    Chamber of Commerce, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen

Friday 19 November 2010                  Inspire Conferences, Beach Boulevard, Aberdeen

Friday 3 December 2010                    Broadstraik Inn, Elrick, Aberdeenshire

Tuesday 25 January 2011                   Chamber of Commerce, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen

Thursday 24 February 2011                Chamber of Commerce, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen

An additional EVENING date has been added to this series:

Thursday 18 November 2010 (6.15-9.30pm) in the Union Square Management Suite, City Centre

Some Background

Some Background

The planning system is changing. Efficiency, inclusiveness, sustainability and fit-for-purpose are the Scottish Government's bywords for the modernised system introduced on August 3rd 2009.  They will be reflected partly in the way that plans are prepared and planning applications are handled; and partly in changes in behaviour.  Everybody involved in planning, from local authorities to developers to local communities, is expected to play their part in making the new planning system work.

One of the ACSEF priorities is to “improve the efficiency of planning decision making”.  In 2009, the Planning Modernisation Group (PMG) was formed to progress a number of actions under this priority and to help to bring about a change in the way that everyone involved in the planning system works together.   The ACSEF Planning Workshops have been developed as part of this work.

The half day workshop will help you to understand:

  • The aims of the planning reforms.
  • How the new system will work.
  • What is expected of the different players in the planning system - local communities, developers, public authorities and others.
  • How you can get the most out of the new planning system.

The workshop has been designed to be interesting and engaging, and to address issues raised with ACSEF about the new planning system.  There will be plenty of opportunity for everybody to network and contribute.  You won't be expected to sit still and listen to presentations all afternoon! The overall aim of the workshop is to ensure that all of the stakeholders involved understand that we need to work together to achieve better outcomes.

Who would benefit from attending?

Planners, builders, developers, community councils, infrastructure providers, agents, consultants, elected members, architects, students – anyone at all who is involved with or affected by the planning system.

When asked “What aspect of the event stands out as being the most effective for you?” delegates on previous workshops said;

“Hearing and understanding a cross-section of different views from across the planning process”

“The mix of participants: this process can only work if we all accept the validity of others needs”

“Discussions with varied professionals and Councillors”

“I learnt about the magnitude of planners’ work”

“Community view of effective consultation” and “Awareness-raising of the new planning process”

“As an academic, I found it interesting to hear the views of others who have practical experience of the planning system”
