Action man for Northern Star

Ben-FogleBen Fogle, all round adventurer and one of the nation's favourite television presenters, will host this year's Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Northern Star Business Awards on September 24.

In 2000 Ben volunteered to be marooned on Taransay, a remote windswept island in the Outer Hebrides as part of the BBC's big millennium project, Castaway 2000. The rest is history. Since then, he has presented numerous programmes including the BBC's Animal Park, Countryfile, Wild in Africa, Crufts, One Man and His Dog, Holiday and Cash in the Attic and recently appeared in the BBC's new adventure series, Extreme Dreams.

The Through Hell and High Water series followed Ben and double Olympic oarsman James Cracknell as they attempted to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a 21 foot wooden rowing boat. The series followed the trials and tribulations as the two struggled with the elements.

Ben has toured the world on numerous broadcasting assignments and has also found the time to publish three books and write for numerous titles including the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Sun, Country Life, the Daily Mail, the Evening Standard and the New York Times.

Ben said he is looking forward to coming to Aberdeen to host the Northern Star Business Awards.

"It's going to be a spectacular evening. The Chamber has lined up another wonderful event which I am personally really looking forward to. Once again, Northern Star is expected to be the highlight of the city's business events calendar.

"Of course the real stars of the show will be the companies and individuals who have been nominated and shortlisted for the actual awards. They are the ones who have contributed so much to the success of the North-east economy and I'm sure they will each have an inspirational story to tell," he said.

"We are absolutely delighted that Ben has agreed to host this year's awards," said
in-coming Chamber Chief Executive, Robert Collier. "I am sure that his warmth and spirit will bring a whole new dimension to the Chamber's highly regarded flagship event.

"The Northern Star Business Awards, which takes place on Thursday 24 September at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, is now officially launched and there has already been a lot of interest in the event.Ben-Fogle

Robert added; "This year, we will present three awards in the Overall Business category - Small, Medium and Large - to better reflect the composition of our Chamber membership. The Small Award will be awarded to a company with 50 FTE employees or less; the Medium Award will cover companies with between 50 and 250 FTE employees while the Large Award will be open to companies with more than 250 FTE employees."

Back on the podium this year will be the Sustainability Award which has been reintroduced to reflect the increasing business appetite among companies to include sustainable practices in their business plans.

The closing date for nominations for this year's awards is Friday, May 22.
