AKE Issues New Iraq Advice

ABERDEEN – Over 100 people were killed during violence in Iraq last week. Over 200 more were injured.

Terrorist attacks remain a regular occurrence following the withdrawal of US troops at the end of last year. According to AKE Iraq specialist John Drake the outlook is not good.

“The US pullout has not signalled a decrease in violence. It’s actually more likely to lead to greater violence in the short-term. The political environment is also fragile and it’s fostering potentially explosive tensions on the ground”

Amid the changing situation, AKE has updated its risk analysis and advice for Iraq on its intelligence website Global Intake. According to the update threat groups may specifically try to attack the Iraqi security forces as they will be regarded as vulnerable without US assistance.

Foreign commercial interests are also still regarded as an attractive target. A number of the terrorist organisations in Iraq still view international companies as a representation of western intervention in the country. They therefore see foreign personnel and foreign-owned property as a legitimate target.
