AKE Lowers Tripoli Risk RatingAKE has lowered the security risk rating for Tripoli on its intelligence website Global Intake. The security and political risk consultancy firm has revised the rating from 63 (Open Conflict) to 26 (Unstable). This is a considerable jump in AKE’s 1-100 scale which ranks countries on how dangerous they are. The Libyan capital has seen a sustained improvement in the security environment following the city’s liberation by rebel forces. AKE sources on the ground describe the security situation as positive and report that the National Transitional Council has been able to exert its authority throughout major areas of the city.
However, the country as a whole remains rated at 64 as pockets of violence continue in many areas. Fighters loyal to Muammar Gaddafi attacked an oil refinery in the town of Ras Lanuf on 12 September. At least 15 guards at the refinery were killed in the attack, which served as a reminder of the potential security threat posed by the remaining pro-Gaddafi elements.
Meanwhile, seven rebel fighters were killed and 10 others were wounded in fighting around the town of Bani Walid. Rebel fighters are attempting to regain control of the town, but have faced fierce resistance from Gaddafi loyalists. Sporadic fighting is expected to continue and could intensify if rebel forces attempt another push aimed at taking control of the town. 99 views
