AKE Warns of Ukraine Violence

LONDON – Ukraine may see a rise in violence after the sentencing of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Security consultancy AKE raised the risk rating for Ukraine earlier today to AKE12 on intelligence websiteGlobal Intake. This rating denotes ‘Flashpoint’ status, indicating the likelihood of civil unrest, strikes and riots involving spontaneous violence.

Clashes have previously broken out in central Kiev between opposition protestors and security personnel, and the culmination of the ruling is likely to enflame existing tensions.

AKE advises personnel to take caution in the vicinity of large public gatherings, particularly in areas around the Pechersky District Court, Kreshchatik Boulevard, Pushkinska Street, Bogdan Khmelnitsky Street, Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, Arsenalnaya metro and Bessarabian Square.

Meanwhile, AKE also lowered the risk rating for Bulgaria earlier today following a calming of tensions around the country, including in the cities of Sofia and Plovdiv. The rating is now AKE8.

All main political parties were quick to condemn the recent violence between the Bulgarian and Roma communities and will be keen to prevent any further outbreaks in the run-up to presidential elections on 23 October.

Personnel should be aware, however, that relations between the two communities will remain tense and similar isolated incidents are likely to continue.
