Aker Qserv names JDRF 2011 charity of the year

Oil services company Aker Qserv has continued its support of life-saving children’s charity Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) by naming it their chosen charity for 2011.

The Aberdeen-headquartered company has announced it will work together with the medical research charity to help boost fundraising activities in support of JDRF’s search for the cure to type 1 diabetes.

Aker Qserv employees have already been doing their bit to help raise money for the charity. In September 2010, a team of 25 staff joined pupils from Portlethen Primary School to take part in the Scotland Walk to Cure Diabetes, raising an impressive £6,200 for JDRF.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the body’s own immune system to turn on itself and attack cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. The condition affects about 350,000 adults in the UK, including over 25,000 children and requires multiple daily insulin injections and finger prick blood tests to manage. It can cause devastating complications including blindness, heart disease, amputation, stroke and kidney failure and reduces life expectancy by 20 years.

Alastair Brookes, development manager for JDRF in Scotland said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as Aker Qserv’s charity of the year in 2011. I’m confident that we can work together to raise a significant amount of money for research to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and look forward to being part of this exciting partnership.”

Graeme Wood, operational director for process and pipeline at Aker Qserv, has been actively involved in the fundraising so far. He said: “We are very proud to be sponsoring such a worthwhile cause and will do its upmost to raise as much as possible to help aid the research into finding the cure for type 1 diabetes.”
