Aker Solutions chief to address young energy professionals

THE president and managing director of one of the biggest oil and gas service companies in the UK will help young energy professionals unlock their potential during an industry event in Aberdeen later this month.

Mike Forbes, the newly appointed head of Aker Offshore Partner, part of global engineering and construction services firm Aker Solutions, will be the guest speaker at the second Young Professionals in Oil and Gas (YPOG) seminar of 2011.

He will address an audience of approximately 150 young professionals at the event on June 30th. The seminar is part of a programme developed by professional services firms Deloitte and McGrigors LLP, to provide an advisory and networking forum for those currently building a career in the oil and gas industry.

A chartered engineer, Mr Forbes has more than two decades’ experience in the offshore oil and gas industry. His career has spanned a variety of roles including structural engineering, project engineering, total quality management, health and safety management, project management, contract management and corporate senior management. He also led Aker Solutions’ UK team responsible for the decommissioning of the Total Frigg field.

Immediately prior to his current role, he was vice president of modifications, responsible for the delivery of the modifications and brownfield projects business stream within Aker Solutions.

During his talk, Mr Forbes will touch on how young people can maximise their potential to best exploit opportunities as they occur, and how the next generation can build a long and successful career in the energy sector.

Louise McPherson, who leads the Young Professionals programme for Deloitte, said: “Aker Solutions is a globally recognised name and one of the biggest employers in the north-east so we are delighted to have someone of Mike’s calibre agree to share his perspectives with us. Mike’s varied career, and new role within such a large industry player, should enable young professionals to see the long and exciting career they can have in the oil and gas industry, whether in the UKCS or further afield.”

Carol Preston, a senior solicitor and lead at McGrigors LLP, said: “Mike has a wealth of industry knowledge and we’re really looking forward to hearing from him and learning from his experiences.”

The seminar, which is free of charge, will take place at the Douglas Hotel, Market Street from 5.45pm onwards. If you would like to attend please register in advance via www.deloitte.co.uk/events
