AMEC Supports People with Learning Disabilities

Kind-hearted staff from the Aberdeen arm of an international engineering and project management company brushed up their general knowledge skills to compete in a pub quiz and raise funds to help people with learning disabilities.

AMEC, which supplies asset support, engineering and project management services to the world’s energy industry, organised the charity pub quiz on the 27th October at Douglas Hotel on Market Street. £1,200 was raised on the night and has been donated to local charity Inspire.

“The funds raised from the quiz are to be split between two of our innovative services which aim to improve the quality of life of the people who rely upon us” said Fiona Poustie, Head of Business Development & Fundraising at Inspire, “During these difficult economic times we are very grateful for support from companies such as AMEC”.

Part of the money raised will be used to purchase buddi technology systems which will assist with independent travel training for youngsters with learning disabilities who are being taught to travel to higher education institutions or their new work place. These discreet GPS devices can locate the wearer within minutes if they get lost or fail to return home. Modern technology such as buddi has the potential to offer a level of independence that would previously have been impossible to imagine.

The rest of the funds will go towards Inspire’s innovative training for employment scheme, Café Academy. This unique course arms its students with the skills, knowledge and experiences required to enter mainstream employment within the hospitality and customer service industries.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to the team from AMEC and the 170 people who turned out on the night” continued Fiona, “With their support we are a step closer to helping youngsters supported by Inspire live a normal life within the circumstances of their own choosing”.
