ANNIE LENNOX PLEDGES SUPPORT TO THIS WEEKEND’S CELEBRATE ABERDEEN PARADEA celebratory parade for Aberdeen’s charities, social enterprises and volunteering organisations will take place this weekend to highlight their contribution to the city. Over 3,000 volunteers, employees and beneficiaries are expected to take part in Celebrate Aberdeen on Saturday, June 11, joined by a host of street performers, musicians and dancers.
The event will see participants parade from the Holburn Street junction, from 11am on Saturday, along the full length of Union Street, before finishing at the Castlegate.
Among those who have championed the parade is Aberdeen-born, international recording artist Annie Lennox, who has pledged her support for the event.
Although unable to attend on the day, Annie said: “On June 11th, a wonderful event will take place in the heart of Aberdeen. A coalition of over 130 organisations and community groups will join together to parade down the historic main street of the city, to celebrate, and take a moment to ‘be seen and heard’.
“In my view, the real heroes of this world are folks you might never have heard of. The people who ask for no praise or recognition, but are continuously and consistently there, wherever they're needed, to support, give counsel, information and guidance, or even just a listening ear, to say…’I'm here’..'You're not alone.’
“The heroes of your city will be walking down Union Street. Join them. Celebrate with them. Show them that you endorse the incredible things they do.”
Alison Chandler, funding and business planning officer at ACVO – a key partner in the planning of the parade - added: “We are delighted at the response we have had, from both the third sector and local businesses and organisations which have chosen to support participants.
“Aberdeen has a wonderful and extremely valuable third sector that the city should be very proud of, and this parade is the ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the individual groups participating in it, as well as the sector as a whole. I would urge the citizens of Aberdeen to show their support and appreciation for all the good causes and organisations in the city by coming along to the parade on Saturday to share in our celebrations and enjoy the spectacle.”
Members of the public are invited to take along their loose change to hand over to official collectors. All profits from the day will be donated to a new fund, managed by ACVO, to create new capacity for the city’s third sector.
A number of road closures will be in place around the City Centre both prior to and for the duration of the parade.
