Announcement of BP Fine Art and Design Awards Launches Gray's Degree Show 2011The winners of this year's BP Design Award and BP Fine Art Award will be presented with specially commissioned trophies and a cheque for £500 each this evening (17 June) at the opening night of Gray's School of Art Degree Show 2011, sponsored by BP for the eighth year. Tim Smith, BP's Vice President of Communications & External Affairs said, "BP is delighted to continue our support of Gray's Degree Show to help showcase new talent and to reinforce the growing reputation for excellence in the arts in the North-east of Scotland. In the eight years that BP has been involved with Gray's Degree Show we have been continually impressed by the standard of the students' work. This year has been no exception and choosing the winners was very difficult. The breadth of originality and creativity exhibited at the Show is of great credit to Gray's."
The BP Design Award was won by fashion design student Sarah Struthers from Lanark, now living in Aberdeen. Sarah created a highly decorative series of garments all made from recycled clothes left to Sarah by her grandmother and great-grandmother. The judges were particularly impressed by Sarah's work which aims to find solutions to fabric waste in modern day society.
Sarah, who will graduate in the summer with a BA (Hon) in Fashion Design, will receive the BP Design Award trophy together with a cheque for £500.
The BP Fine Art Award was won by photographic and electronic media student Dagmar Vyhnalkova. Dagmar's work includes a collection of stunning photographs based on things that are around her in her everyday life. The judges were particularly impressed by Dagmar's idea of seeing a picture as an entrance into a world which has different logics depending on the thought processes of the viewer.
Dagmar, who will graduate in the summer with a BA (Hons) Photographic and Electronic Media, will receive the BP Fine Art Award trophy together with a cheque for £500.
In addition to the main prizes Hannah Harkes and Ferne McIntosh, both from Aberdeen, were highly commended in the BP Fine Art category. Kevin Cameron and Natalie Lozano both of Aberdeen were also commended in the BP Design Award. All four students will receive a cheque for £250.
Professor Paul Harris, Head of Gray's School of Art said, "BP's continued support provides an added dimension to the degree show and gives great encouragement to the new crop of talented artists and designers. The creative energy of Gray's students is particularly evident at this year's show and visitors will be able to see and purchase work of a very high standard." 214 views
