BEFRIEND A CHILD HAILS AWARENESS RAISING ‘BLUE AND YELLOW DAY’ A GREAT SUCCESSLocal children’s charity, Befriend A Child, has hailed its first-ever awareness raising day – held earlier this week – a resounding success. The Befriend A Child Blue and Yellow Day – named in recognition of the charity’s corporate colours – took place on Wednesday, June 08, with the aim of increasing awareness of the organisation and the vital work it does with disadvantaged children in Aberdeen City.
A host of fun activities – all with a blue and yellow theme – were arranged by a number of businesses and organisations in support of the charity, including Aberdeen-based GE Oil and Gas, Ellees Hair Salon, Mackenzie PR and SHMU Radio, and Flowerpots Childcare Nursery, at Newmachar.
Local schools also got in on the act as well, with both Airyhall Primary School and Tullos Primary School participating in the event with pupils dressing in blue and yellow, playing blue and yellow themed games and eating blue and yellow snacks to mark the occasion.
The charity’s mascot Kuddles the Kangaroo bounced his way around the North-east on the day, joining Befriend A Child staff to visit all those organisations taking part to give talks on the work of the charity and collect any funds raised.
Befriend A Child’s Chief Executive, Karen Farquhar said she was thrilled with how well the first Blue and Yellow Day had been supported by the local community.
She said: “Wednesday was a fantastic day and it was great for the staff to get out and about Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to see how many organisations had supported the event and to answer any questions they had about the work we do. We are already looking forward to next year’s event and thinking of how we can make Blue and Yellow Day 2012 bigger and better with even more organisations involved.”
Established in 1975, Befriend A Child is Scotland's oldest befriending service for disadvantaged children. Working with social workers, care homes, health visitors, and other charities, Befriend A Child supports children aged 4-16 and continues to work with them up until the age of 18, if required.
The scheme became a registered charity in 1991 and in 2010 worked with more than 170 children in Aberdeen City - its largest number to date.
