Boost for city centre night-time taxi ranksAberdeen city centre will have four night-time taxi ranks operating from midnight until 5am seven days a week from Monday 19 September. The city centre previously had three night-time ranks running at weekends only – but provision will now be increased on the recommendation of taxi representatives, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Community Safety Partnership and Grampian Police.
The new set-up will provide consistency of provision for customers and drivers, and an extra rank on the south side of Castle Street in the bus lay-by outside the Sheriff Court to serve the east of the city centre. The other three ranks are on Union Street – next to St Nicholas Kirkyard, Bon Accord Street and Summer Street. Signing, lining and specially lit poles denote the location of the ranks.
The location for the fourth night-time rank on Castle Street was recommended because it is close to several late-night venues, and is well lit and covered by high-specification CCTV cameras.
Aberdeen City Council Licensing Committee convener Councillor Kirsty West said: “It makes good sense to have a single system operating throughout the week and to provide a further night-time rank at the east end of Union Street. I believe it is a safer and more easily understood system than what we had previously, and I am sure the addition of the extra rank and the increase to seven days a week will be welcomed by drivers and passengers alike.” 168 views
