CANCER CHARITY SET TO BENEFIT FROM FIRSTGROUP MARATHON RUNNER

A FirstGroup employee has set himself a target of raising £1,000 for Breast

Cancer Care by taking part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on 2 October

2011. He has been helped by a donation from First’s Charity and Sponsorship

Committee which awarded him £400.

Ian Broughton (42 from London) moved to Aberdeen with his family four years

ago to pursue his career with FirstGroup as Assistant Treasury Operations

Manager.

Earlier this year Ian decided to take on the marathon in aid of Breast

Cancer Care after having experienced the effects cancer has had on a member

of his family. In 2008, his wife Roslynn (now 38) was diagnosed with

breast cancer. Following difficult medical treatment, and with support from

the charity, she has now completely recovered.

Ian said: “I am delighted that FirstGroup has helped me raise funds for

Breast Cancer Care. Roslynn’s illness was a very difficult period,

particularly as we have two young children, but thanks to her strength, the

support of family, friends and Breast Cancer Care she has made a full

recovery.”

Ian has some running experience having completed a few 10k runs, including

Run Balmoral, and the Mull of Kintyre half marathon in 2009. However, this

will be his first full marathon and the first time he will run on behalf of

a charity.

He added: “Taking on the marathon will be the hardest physical challenge I

have endured – but I wanted to give something back to the charity that

supported us so well.”

Breast Cancer Care is a charity that combines personal experiences of

people affected by breast cancer with clinical expertise to provide

information and offer emotional and practical support. It also campaigns

for improvements in standards of support and care and promotes the

importance of early detection.
