Capita appoints specialist advisor in occupational health

Capita has appointed former Aberdeen academic and GP Dr Finlay Dick as a senior occupational physician.

Dr Dick, who is also a co-author of the Oxford Handbook of Occupational Health, brings a wealth of experience, garnered across a range of industries, to the organisation and will play a role in clinical governance, advising on policy and procedures, in addition to advising clients.

Inverness-born, he was latterly a senior lecturer in Occupational Medicine in the Environmental and Occupational Medicine Group at the University of Aberdeen where he had studied medicine.

He worked in Aberdeen and Elgin before training as a GP, qualifying as a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1991.

His move into occupational health came when he joined what was then the Robert Gordon Institute of Technology Survival Centre where he was involved in both the oil and shipping industries and lectured to offshore rig medics.

During his career he has also provided occupational health services to Grampian Police and Grampian Fire Brigade and was an Honorary Consultant in Occupational Medicine with NHS Grampian.

While lecturing at Aberdeen University he was coordinator for a five-centre European Union funded project studying the genetic, environmental and occupational risk factors for Parkinson’s Disease and also worked with Dr Bill Gunnyeon, the chief medical adviser at the Department of Work and Pensions.

Dr Dick said: “I’m delighted to be taking up this post with Capita and working with them to develop what is already and excellent service and take it on to the next level which is to internationalise their services.”

A fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, he has written and contributed to numerous books and papers, recently working on the second edition of the Oxford Handbook of Occupational Health, which he co-wote with Dr Julia Smedley of Southampton University and Dr Steve Sadhra of Birmingham University in 2007.

Capita will be on stand 1E65 at Offshore Europe (Sept 6-8, 2011) at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
