Carbon reduction at heart of new council campaign

Aberdeen City Council staff are taking part in a new initiative to help colleagues reduce waste and save resources in council buildings across the city.

The volunteers, known as Carbon Reduction Champions, will encourage staff to ‘Cut Your Carbon’ in a campaign that has been partly funded by the Carbon Trust.

Aberdeen City Council is one of 12 Scottish councils selected to take part in the scheme, along with six universities and six NHS health boards.

The council’s Carbon Reduction Champions will be advising the local authority’s 10,000 staff how to make the most of finite fossil fuels, save resources such as water and paper and other energy efficient work practices.

This work is part of the council’s overall carbon reduction plan which aims to cut the local authority’s carbon emissions by 23% by 2015 and by 42% by 2020.

The campaign kicked off this week with an initial training session and launch by Council Leader, Councillor Callum McCaig.

Cllr McCaig welcomed the initiative, saying: “It is extremely heartening to see council staff working together to help reduce the council’s carbon footprint.

"Small changes can make all the difference and I think if we all do our part it will put us on the right track to meeting these ambitious targets.”
