City bulb planting project back by popular demand

A popular bulb planting scheme continues this week with green-fingered pupils from three Aberdeen schools taking part.

Councillor Bill Cormie leads the annual project, which this year will involve youngsters from Mile End, Skene Square and Gilcomstoun primaries.

They will gather at various locations in the Rosemount and Midstocket areas of the city on Friday [18 November], planting on sections of green space which they pass on their way to and from school.

This week’s programme will bring the total number of bulbs planted since the project began five years ago to 70,000.

Cllr Cormie said: “The 70,000 bulbs milestone is a great achievement for all the young folk who have taken part in the planting over the years.

“The children benefit greatly from this project as many of them do not have access to gardens at home. We try to focus the planting on green spaces on the school routes so youngsters can see the fruits of their labour everyday. The project also instils a sense of civic pride in the children which is great for the city as a whole.”

Pupils from Mile End School will join Cllr Cormie at Raeden Park Road at 9.30am. Youngsters from Skene Square will meet at Loanhead Terrace at 11am and children from Gilcomstoun will gather at Leadside Road, off Jack’s Brae, at 1pm.
