City Council appoints new LeaderCouncillor Callum McCaig was today [Weds 29 June] confirmed at a Full Council meeting as the new Leader of Aberdeen City Council. The SNP group leader was proposed for the role by outgoing Council Leader Councillor John Stewart, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, who has now become Deputy Leader of Aberdeen City Council.
Councillor Stewart signalled his intention to resign as Council Leader after the SNP won the Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward by-election last week. The win led to the SNP holding 15 seats on Aberdeen City Council and the Liberal Democrats 13.

Councillor McCaig said: “My Administration will be focusing on the priorities for Aberdeen – on the needs of the most vulnerable people, on making sure our children reach their full potential, on building new affordable homes, on improving our infrastructure and waste management, and on ensuring a sustainable economic future.
“In my term as Leader, I want to work constructively with each and every elected member, with the Chief Executive of Aberdeen City Council, with all of our officers and with the people of Aberdeen to do the very best for this city.
“I would also wish to pay tribute to Councillor John Stewart for his term as Council Leader and the extremely hard work he undertook in that role for the citizens of Aberdeen.“
