City residents urged to make use of waste food recycling service over festive periodAberdeen residents are being reminded that kerbside collections of food waste will continue as normal over the festive period. Residents are asked to make use of their kitchen caddy and compostable bio liners when discarding food. Anyone who has not received a kitchen caddy and those who would like a replacement caddy or additional bio liners can contact Aberdeen City Council’s Waste Aware team and still have these items delivered before Christmas. Bio liners are also available from the customer service centre in Marischal College or from the council’s customer access points.
The Waste Aware team can be contacted on 08456 08 09 19. More information is available on the Aberdeen City Council website by searching for ‘food waste’. Residents can also visit www.wasteawarelovefood.org.uk for a variety of recipes featuring leftover food, to help people reduce the amount of food they throw away.
Scottish households throw out around 650,000 tonnes of waste food each year. Much of this ends up in landfill sites where it breaks down to produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Waste food that is collected for recycling is turned into compost and used for agricultural, horticultural and landscaping purposes. 129 views
