City to host its own football world cupABERDEEN will host its own football world cup next month as part of a drive to bring together different ethnic groups in the city. Teams from minority organisations and the wider community will take part in the fun Aberdeen Community Football League, aimed at improving relations between different groups. The one-day event, backed by Grampian Police, will take place at Aberdeen Sports Village on June 4. So far teams from Polish, Russian, Portuguese, Argentinian, Nigerian, Algerian, Indian and Pakistani associations have signed up. Aberdeen Football Club, the police, Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, Street Sport, Aberdeen College and both city universities will also take part. Organiser David Imevbore, 36, of Clifton Road in the city, runs a company providing drumming workshops, entertainment and tuition. He said: “Football brings people together. It’s a brilliant shared experience for people to have. It increases cultural integration whereby people from other communities can better understand and approach each other.” The community football league has been running for six years. The event will run from 11am to 6pm, with an after party and raffle draw at the Enigma Bar in Belmont Street. 132 views
