Cognity to Present at Free Oil and Gas Webinar

Cognity, an independent engineering consultancy based in Aberdeen, is presenting at a free webinar in conjunction with engineering simulation software specialists ANSYS. Targeted at oil and gas professionals, the hour long web-based seminar, ‘Structural Solutions for the Offshore Industry’, will take place on Tuesday, 7th February 2012.

Aimed at engineers, designers, analysts, project managers and directors, the webinar will explore the design of structures in oil and gas industry using ANSYS structural mechanics software.

The session will begin with an overview of the comprehensive range of product offerings from ANSYS in the structural mechanics sector. Delegates will learn about the analysis process in ANSYS Workbench, from geometry to results using implicit Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods to assess the performance of a typical offshore structure.

Cognity’s Technical Manager, Richard Carroll, has years of experience in design and analysis and is well known in the engineering community. He will present a test case to the webinar participants on stress analysis methods for pressurised equipment based on linear linearisation methods, and non-linear small strain and large strain theory. Richard has selected a bursting disc which has experimental results to compare against, and has been assessed previously using competitor software. This analysis shows how the Workbench stream can be used to solve ‘Design by Analysis’ type problems using linear and non linear methods. By comparing the analysis to test results the order of accuracy for each method can also be explored.

Commenting on the upcoming webinar, Richard said: “We are pleased to be taking part in this seminar, highlighting the advantages of ANSYS software as well as its potential. We’ll be profiling a test case that closely mirrors the kind of work we use the software for. We have undertaken numerous projects recently in which we have utilised ANSYS software to run large analysis and simulation models, quickly and concurrently, saving our clients both time and money.”

Cognity specialises in difficult design and analysis projects, requiring large deformation, sliding contact, non-linear materials response fatigue, plasticity, fracture multi-body finite element analysis, collapse and stability studies. These specialisms enable the team to explore and optimise complex mechanical and structural components in the highest levels of detail. As well as offering advanced FEA, simulation, optimisation and testing as stand-alone services, Cognity can combine these with its mechanical and structural design services.
