Compost giveaway at Aberdeen flower show

Householders in Aberdeen will be able to get their hands on free compost this weekend, thanks to a recycling initiative between Aberdeen City Council, waste company SITA and Keenan Recycling Ltd.

Aberdeen’s successful garden/food waste collection service was introduced in 2009 and now serves around 67,500 households across the city.

The compost is created by recycling the waste at Keenan’s in New Deer, Aberdeenshire, to produce a soil improver from material which would otherwise go to landfill.

The compost giveaway will be held on Saturday and Sunday 27–28 August at the Aberdeen Flower and Vegetable Show at Hazlehead Park. Show opening times are 11am–6pm on Saturday and 10am–5pm on Sunday. An admission charge applies. People are asked to bring along their own bags to put the compost into.

The City Council’s Waste Aware Team will be at the event and available to answer any queries people have about recycling services. Volunteers from Aberdeen Forward will also be on hand to give information on reducing your waste.
