Council services may be affected by strike action

Aberdeen City Council will remain open for business if proposed industrial action goes ahead on Wednesday, but it will not be able to provide all services to residents.

The Town House and Marischal College will be open, as will many other facilities and services across the city.

Housing access points will be open. Emergency housing repairs will be available and the emergency homelessness service will be provided.

Care homes and children's homes will be open. Home care will be provided.

Roads teams will be on standby in case of emergencies, including bad weather.

An emergency environmental health and trading standards service will be available.

To contact the council call 08456 080919. It may take longer than usual for calls to be dealt with.

The following services will be affected if the general strike goes ahead:

Waste

There will be no waste collections. If the strike goes ahead the following alternative arrangements will be made:

• The fortnightly collections of household wheeled bins and kerbside recycling collections will be carried out on Saturday, 3 December;

• The weekly collection of household wheeled bins will be carried out on Wednesday, 7 December;

• Garden and food waste collections will be carried out on Wednesday, 14 December;

• Commercial waste collections will be carried out on the customer’s next scheduled collection day;

• Recycling points and household waste and recycling centres will operate as normal.

Householders and commercial waste customers affected by the possible strike action are asked not to place their waste out for collection on 30 November. Collections on the alternative days are scheduled to start at the normal times.

Education

All council schools will be closed to pupils and members of the public, except for groups which are not run by council staff which meet in the 3Rs schools – Cults and Bucksburn academies and Airyhall, Braehead, Mile End, Hazlehead, Heathryburn, Manor Park, Seaton and Kaimhill primaries. If in doubt, members of the public should call to check that the meetings are going ahead before attending.

Community Centres

All Aberdeen City Council-operated community centres and crèches, including those within sports centres, will be closed to the public.

Community centres which are leased and run by independent management committees will not be affected by the action. Community centre users who are unsure whether or not a facility is council-operated are advised to call before attending.

Libraries, Museums and Galleries

Cultural services will also be affected if the general strike goes ahead.

The Central Library will be closed to the public. Some branch libraries are expected to open, but customers should call to check before visiting. The library telephone numbers are available on the council website at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk

Provost Skene's House will be closed.

Aberdeen Art Gallery, including the café and shop, is expected to be open though some rooms may be temporarily closed at lunch time. A lunchtime talk on Rembrandt etchings has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for the new year.

A limited service will be on offer at the Maritime Museum, though some rooms will be closed.
