Council wins European accolade for carbon cuts

Aberdeen City Council’s pioneering work to cut carbon emissions has earned the organisation a best practice certificate.

The authority is one of only two UK councils to receive a certificate at the prestigious European Public Sector Awards (EPSA), which are taking place in Maastricht this week.

The awards are split into three themes: Service Delivery in a Cold Economic Climate; Opening Up the Public Sector Through Collaborative Governance; and Going Green: Concrete Solutions from the Public Sector.

Aberdeen City Council’s submission A Step Change: Aberdeen City Council’s Leadership for a Low Carbon Economy earned it the best practice certificate under the Going Green theme.

Birmingham City Council will receive a certificate for its Business Transformation Programme.

Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure convener Kate Dean said: “A huge amount of very good work has been done by Aberdeen City Council to cut its own carbon emissions and to encourage others to do the same.

“Recognition of this hard and very worthwhile work which not only helps the environment but also helps to cut costs is very welcome, particularly at European level. This is a significant achievement for our council and a reflection of the determination in the city to lead the way in energy management.”

The EPSA brings together the best, most innovative and efficient performers from the European public sector. By highlighting exemplary models of innovative public performance, the awards serve as a catalyst for continued progress in addressing Europe's most pressing concerns while providing a platform for the public sector to share their achievements.
