Countryside rangers call on community to explore hidden gem with Bats to Bugs eventAberdeen City Council’s Countryside Ranger Service has urged residents to leave the comfort of their armchairs and explore the great outdoors for a Bats to Bugs event. Ranger Rob Rowe will lead guests on an afternoon of fun and discovery on October 15 (Saturday) at the Den of Maidencraig Local Nature Reserve. The Bats to Bugs event, which lasts from 3pm to 7pm, promises an afternoon of pond dipping, minibeast hunts and environmental games for all ages. And as darkness descends Ranger Rob hopes to catch a glimpse of the reserve’s native bat population hunting for midges and other insects. Ranger Rob said: “The Den of Maidencraig is one of Aberdeen’s hidden gems. Hopefully we will be able to open people’s eyes and ears to what is close to where they live or work. They will be amazed at what is to be found!” The event has been organised with the help of a grant from Action Earth, who are carrying out a campaign along with Community Service Volunteers (CSV) to encourage more people to get involved with practical environmental projects. As part of the campaign, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) are supporting 155 projects across Scotland by awarding grants for groups that will help support and encourage Scottish biodiversity and encourage volunteers to get involved. As well as getting promising an afternoon of fun and discovery the Maidencraig event will also promote the importance of volunteering and protecting the city’s natural resources.
