Deadlines loom for postal and proxy voting

Aberdeen City Council is urging voters who will be away from home on election day on 05 May to make sure they have their say by applying for a postal or proxy vote.

The deadline for applications for new postal vote applications, and to make changes to existing postal or proxy votes, falls at 5pm on Thursday 14 April. The deadline for new applications to vote by proxy is 5pm on Thursday 21 April.

By completing and returning the forms, voters can ensure they make their voice heard in the polls in the Aberdeen Central, Aberdeen Donside or Aberdeen South & North Kincardine constituencies, and in the Alternative Vote referendum which is being held on the same day.

Returning Officer Valerie Watts said: “It is important to have your say on who represents you in the Scottish Parliament, and 05 May also gives people the chance to help decide on the electoral system for future Westminster polls. Many people are likely to be on holiday on election day next month but they can ensure their vote is counted by applying to vote by post or by proxy.

“The forms are very simple and straightforward and take only a few minutes to complete, and I would urge anyone who cannot get to the polls to use this simple way of ensuring their vote counts.”

People who are planning to go away and who will be absent from the area in the weeks leading up to polling day should consider making arrangements to vote by proxy as they will not be at home to pick up their postal vote application form if they have applied for it by post. For guidance on whether to apply to vote by post or by proxy, telephone the Aberdeen Electoral Unit on (01224) 523501.

Electors can pick up a form in person from the Electoral Registration Office at Woodhill House, Westburn Road, Aberdeen, or copies can be downloaded by using the link at the Vote 2011 page on the Aberdeen City Council website at http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/vote2011/#time
