Easy new way to pay for parking in AberdeenAn easy cash-free way to pay for parking in Aberdeen will be launched next month. PayByPhone allows motorists to pay for their parking over the phone, instead of buying a parking ticket, and to extend their parking time without returning to their vehicle.
From Monday, 5 December the system will operate in city council-run car parks at: Broomhill Road; Fonthill Road; East North Street; Golden Square; Greyfriars/Gallowgate; Summer Street; Jack’s Brae; Chapel Street; Denburn; Virginia Street; and West North Street. Pay and display machines will still be available for those who wish to use cash to pay for their parking.
Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure convener Councillor Kate Dean said: “This new system will make it much easier to use council car parks. A facility which lets drivers pay to extend their stay without dashing back to their car to renew the ticket will, I am sure, be particularly welcomed by all who use our car parks.”
Vice convener John Corall added: “This type of system is widely used by other local authorities throughout the UK and I am glad to see that Aberdeen is following suit, making it easier to shop, socialise, work and do business in the city centre.”
Motorists can register to use PayByPhone at any time. To use the service for the first time, drivers simply register their vehicle and payment card and then continue to make their payment via their mobile phone. Registration and payment can be made by phone, text, online, text, mobile web, or by PayByPhone app.
While registering for PayByPhone, consumers can also choose to receive text reminders that tell them when the parking session is about to expire, so they can extend it without returning to their car. Payments and statements can be monitored easily and securely on the PayByPhone website.
Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure director Gordon McIntosh said: “Cash-free parking is becoming increasingly popular. This is a safe, convenient and secure way to pay to park and saves you searching out the right change or dashing back to put more money in the meter if your trip takes longer than expected.
Motorists using the new system will not have a ticket to display on their vehicles. City wardens can check the status of the vehicles by entering the registration number into their handheld devices, which are automatically updated when a motorist makes a payment.
