Leading Successfully to Enhance Performance

A paragraph about your background:

Elaine – after many years of working in the NHS initially as a physiotherapist and then in organization development and strategic change, now working independently. A longstanding keen interest in the interface between individuals and the organisations within which they work and how that affects them (the individuals and the organisation) and their performance. Now working with a variety of organisations to enhance performance through activities like leadership and team development, culture change, facilitation of events and coaching.

Mark - I have 25 years experience in psychotherapy and human relations consultancy and still run a private practice in Aberdeen. Over the last 15 years, I have also engaged in organisational development offering team and leadership development opportunities and have worked with a range of private and public sector bodies. I have a specific interest in applying positive psychology in organisational environments and in strength-based development.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Elaine – two contrasting types of activities – things that are physically demanding and writing poetry. But I like to have a go at anything new.

Mark - walking through a fine bit of countryside or pursuing the elusive brown trout on a warm spring day. And now and again, there’s nothing like standing round a bonfire with friends sharing a glass of something nice.

If you were a crayon, what colour would you be?

Elaine - in the opinion of my friends and colleagues I would be either gold or aubergine, if I could choose I would be green.

Mark - Hot Orange, what more can I say?

What animal would you be and why?

Elaine - my friends and colleagues say I would be a springbok, sounds OK to me!

Mark - a golden eagle with its wonderful capacity to soar high in the sky.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Elaine - I don’t buy lottery tickets so it would be a real shock!

Mark - probably panic!

What’s your favourite film and why?

Elaine – I‘m not an enormous fan of films but my favourite at the moment is Doubt. Its easier to say something about the kind of books I like – poetry and novels by authors like Vikram Seth, Sebastian Faulks – that is novels built around interesting characters.

Mark - The one that gets to me every time is Chariots of Fire, I love those pieces where Liddell just lets himself run-completely in the flow!

What did you want to be when you were little?

Elaine - I can’t remember what I wanted to be, just what I wanted to do – play tennis, hockey or any other sport.

Mark - I wanted to join the Ben Line shipping company (my grandfather worked for them) sailing to Hong Kong and the Far East.
