First chance to see inside newly built council homesA sneak preview of one of the finished properties in Aberdeen’s new-build council house programme will go ahead on Thursday 28 April at Byron Court, on the former site of Byron Park School in Northfield.
Aberdeen City Council’s new-build is creating the first mainstream social housing in the city for over 30 years.
Phase 1 will see the creation of 85 new homes, 28 at Byron Court, 30 at Hayton Road in Tillydrone, and 27 at Rorie Hall in Cults.
Stewart Milne Construction was awarded the contract to build the Phase 1 homes and a representative will give a tour of the finished property, highlighting the sustainable elements and key features of the development.
Construction began in March 2010 and has progressed well on all three developments, with Phase 1 on course for completion in spring 2011 and the first tenants due to move in this summer.
Aberdeen City Council Housing and Environment convener Councillor Aileen Malone said: “I’m absolutely delighted how the council’s new-build programme has gone to date. To see the first of the homes completed is fantastic.
“This is a significant and very important step in the provision of much-needed new, high-quality council homes in Aberdeen.”
Director of Housing and Environment Pete Leonard added: “The council plans to continue to build more new homes both for general needs and special needs which will make a significant contribution to meeting the demands of our citizens.”
Craig McKillop, regional director of Stewart Milne Construction, said: “The build programme has been going very well and this preview will provide the local community with a chance to see what the new development will bring to the area.
“All of the homes will benefit from the latest sustainable technologies and specifications and, as the first homes near completion, we will work closely with the council to achieve a comprehensive handover within the next month.”
A mix of home types and sizes, including two and three-bedroom family properties will be on offer in Northfield and Tillydrone and one and two-bedroom homes for varying needs in Cults.
Phase 2 is also well under way, with the creation of 35 family homes at Marchburn Drive due for completion in December 2011.
A sod-cutting ceremony to mark the start of Phase 3 will be held at 11am on Thursday 28 April at the site of the former Croft House care home, Oldcroft Place, Stockethill.
Aberdeen City Council’s new-build programme (for all three phases) is being funded by the housing revenue account and £3,030,000 of the Scottish Government’s Incentivising New Council House Building monies. The Oldcroft Place development has received £930,000 (£30,000 per unit) of New Build grant monies from the Scottish Government.
