Fitnut Launches New Year of Health InitiativesA North-east firm that specialises in workplace fitness and nutrition has launched its 12th corporate health challenge to boost the wellbeing of employees. Aberdeen-based fitnut has unveiled its 2012 Charity Challenge, encouraging businesses across the area to help their staff improve their health and fitness.
The company-wide initiative focuses on healthy living in the workplace over a six or twelve week period. Each employee taking part in the challenge is given an initial health assessment measuring blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, stamina and strength.
Throughout the challenge, fitnut’s team of nutrition and fitness experts offer guidance and advice to the corporate teams to help them improve their scores throughout the course. At the end of the period a second health assessment is completed and the most improved employee is the team winner.
Fitnut, which was launched in 2005 and has 12 employees, works with a range of oil and gas industry clients across the North-east, helping to improve workplace health through a number of initiatives and educational events.
In addition to boosting employee fitness, the Charity Challenge also raises funds for a range of charities.
Fitnut Managing Director Penny McIntosh said: “This initiative is a fantastic way to encourage employees to tackle any health issues and take time out to look after themselves through increased exercise and a better eating plan. A good employer should realise the importance of looking after the wellbeing of their team and fitness and nutrition should be top of the list. Working as a group to hit these healthy targets is great for team building and, of course, there’s always a little bit of fun competition. At the end of the day, a healthy team leads to a happy and more productive workplace.”
The 2012 Charity Challenge was launched at an event to celebrate the achievements of the corporate firms that took part in this year’s challenge, raising more than £4000 for North-east charities, including CLAN cancer support, Glencraft and Friends of Roxburghe House.
Employees that participate in the initiative make a donation and the most improved person from each team chooses a charity to benefit from the money raised by their company.
It’s also been revealed that tailored nutrition and fitness plans for each participant has been introduced to next year’s Charity Challenge, which will help provide an additional health boost to those companies taking part.
Fitnut is encouraging more North-east firms to join in the Charity Challenge and take that first step towards a healthier workplace in 2012.
Matt Corbin, Regional General Manager of Drilling & Production for GE Oil & Gas, participated in this year’s challenge.
Mr Corbin said: "Taking part in the fitnut Charity Challenge is great for employee engagement and it fits very well with GE’s commitment to promote health in the workplace. We've been involved with the Challenge for 10 years now; people look forward to taking part in it and it really gives people a reason to exercise. Joining this initiative gives companies a great chance to do something small, but concrete, to promote a healthier lifestyle and with a competitive edge, it creates some great banter round the workplace."
