Flood protection moves forward in Stonehaven

Residents of Stonehaven will have the first chance to see new flood outline maps for the town and to comment on them next month. (June)

Council officers are currently in the process of investigating longer term options for flood alleviation at the town’s River Carron, including the Glasslaw Burn.

As part of that process, two public meetings are to be held, the first of which will take place on June 16.

The event will be an ideal opportunity for people to find out more about investigations into long-term options and to ask any questions.

An informal information session will take place in the Town Hall in the afternoon, with a more formal presentation and question session to take place at the Invercarron Resource Centre in the evening.

As part of the event new 200 year flood outline maps will be presented for comment before they are finalised.

The maps will show the current extent of flood risk in the town from the River Carron for a range of extreme events up to and including the one in 200 flood, i.e. a flood with a probability of occurrence in any one year of 0.5%.

“This is an important opportunity for residents to see new information on the progress towards finding long term flood prevention solutions for the town and find out about the next stages in the process,” said Kincardine and Mearns area manager, Willie Munro.

In addition to the displays and presentations on finding long-term solutions, there will be a display of flood prevention products for householders and more information on the flood warden scheme for Stonehaven.

One of the ten areas identified as potentially benefiting from a flood warden now has two confirmed wardens in place, with wardens still being sought for the other areas.

“We are very keen to see more local people join the flood warden scheme,” said Stonehaven and District Community Council representative George Strang.

“Although we are in a dry spell now, it is far better to be prepared for the future.

“We will carry on trying to recruit volunteers as we know people in Stonehaven are passionate about their town and care about the plans in place to defend it in cases of extreme weather.”
