Glencraft welcomes Royal visitor

Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy, was in Aberdeen visiting Glencraft, the factory which makes beds and mattresses, providing employment for blind and disabled workers in Aberdeen.

Meeting with Glencraft employees and supporters, the Princess was there to learn more about the work of Glencraft from those who have worked hard to sustain the social enterprise.

Known for her work with the blind, Princess Alexandra, first cousin to The Queen, is a Patron of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and of Action for Blind People as well as President of Sight Savers International.

On her visit to Glencraft’s premises on the city’s Wellington Road, the Princess met with all 41 of the charity’s employees, 31 of whom are visually impaired or disabled.

Andy Laing, operations director at Glencraft said:

“We have just completed a refurbishment of our showroom so it was great to have such a special guest visit us. The Princess made a point of meeting and spending time with every single member of staff and everyone was really pleased to see her.”

Glencraft is a Royal Warrant holder having been a supplier of beds to the Royal Family for many decades.

With support from Wood Group PSN, a £500,000 fundraising campaign to ‘Help Find Glencraft a New Home’ was launched last year after it was realised that more suitable premises were required to help the business to become sustainable in the future. The campaign is ongoing with over £250,000 raised to date.
