Historic Donside bridge reopens after refurbishmentAn historic Donside bridge has reopened on schedule this week following a major refurbishment by Aberdeenshire Council. (w/b Oct 24) Grade B-listed Luib Bridge, near Corgarff in the Cairngorms, is a two-span masonry arch bridge, built in 1830.
Thousands of snowsport enthusiasts and visitors add to the traffic over the bridge each year, as it carries the A939 Colnabaichen to the Lecht road over the River Don.
The bridge was closed in July following the discovery of extensive damage caused by last year’s severe winter weather.
The cost of the refurbishment works was around £129,000, including the removal of the existing carriageway surface to replace weather-damaged concrete infill above each arch.
Work also involved the complete rebuilding of the bridge side walls and parapets, which were noticeably tilting, using the original stones with a new lime mortar.
Vehicles have been able to continue to use this important route using a 30-metre long metal trestle bridge, constructed alongside the original bridge before work began.
This temporary bridge will now be removed and the land reinstated to its original condition. 76 views
