How to Avoid Christmas Office Treat Temptations

The Christmas season can be a time of overindulgence, especially when it comes to calories and the workplace can be a big source of temptation, with an abundance of sweets and snacks, but these treats don’t have to tip the scales.

North-east workplace health & fitness company, fitnut, says there are some clever ways to combat holiday weight gain, avoid temptation around the office and keep up with your fitness regime.

Here are a few tips on how to stay healthy when surrounded by temptation:

• A little indulgence – Some foods are only around at Christmas, so don’t feel bad about enjoying your favourite treats but don't over do it. If you try to avoid all these treats you may be tempted to binge, so enjoy in moderation to satisfy your cravings, but no second helpings.

• Breakfast like a king – Fill up with a good breakfast including some protein to stave off those hunger pangs and help you avoid the office temptations in between meals.

• Healthy snacks – stock up on healthy snacks like fruit and nuts and keep them at hand to nibble on rather than heading for office chocolate or biscuit stash.

• Skip the alcohol – Alcoholic drinks are loaded with calories, especially sugary cocktails. If you’re worried about weight gain, stick with sparkling water at the office party, which will also help your skin. If you want to join in some festive cheer with your colleagues, limit your alcoholic intake and always drink plenty of water to flush out your system. When using mixers, always opt for the low calorie version.

• Walk it off – Many companies have Christmas lunches or nights out – if the venue is near the office, try to walk there and back instead of driving or taking a cab. This will help offset any extra calories consumed.

• Every little helps – Take the stairs instead of the lift, park in the furthest away parking space and walk the rest of the way, get off the bus a stop early, enjoy a run or a brisk 30 minute walk every lunchtime. Get away from the desk for some fresh air to increase your metabolism and clear your head. If your workplace has a gym use it either before or after work or during your lunchbreak – a short 30 minute workout with come cardiovascular and strength work is ideal.

Managing Director Penny McIntosh said: “Christmas is a time to enjoy, but this doesn’t mean loading your body with high fat, high sugar treats and giving up on exercise. By practising some self-discipline and limiting your intake, you can have a good time without worrying about starting out the new year feeling bloated, unfit and under the weather.”
