International Street Market caps award winning year with return trip to Granite City

The award winning International Street Market will return to Aberdeen this weekend for its final visit of 2011.

The three day event which starts on Friday (November 4) is expected to once again draw thousands of visitors and shoppers to the city centre who are keen to sample an array of products from around the UK and across Europe.

Over 350 metres of stalls will take part in the market’s traditional pitch on Union Terrace with traders from Italy, France, Holland, Finland, Poland, Thailand, India, China and Indonesia all selling their wares.

Amongst the most popular products are wooden flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables, plants, herbs and spices, all complemented by food tastings and the continental atmosphere created at the market.

City centre manager Tom Moore said: “Once again we will see many of the old favourites, but will be adding some newcomers, with traders from around 18 countries coming from the four corners of the world.

“The Aberdeen International Street Market was voted top in the UK for 2011, it is the only large International Market in the north of Scotland.”

The market’s final visit to Aberdeen this year will again be managed by Francois Xavier-Mauraisin, from Paris-based operators Geraud. He said: “The traders are looking forward to the return to Aberdeen. We are constantly searching the world for new things to temp you, and in this market you will see even more new names.’’

In order for the market to be accommodated in the city centre the following traffic restrictions will be in place from Friday until Sunday night:

• Union Terrace will be closed between Union Street and Rosemount Viaduct, including the slip road between Rosemount Viaduct and Union Terrace;

• Diamond Place will be closed between Diamond Street and Union Terrace;

• there will be no parking on Union Terrace or the slip road between Rosemount Viaduct and Union Terrace (except market operatives vehicles);

• the right-turn ban for buses from Skene Street into Rosemount Viaduct will be suspended.

A diversion route will be in place via Union Street, Broad Street, Upperkirkgate, Schoolhill and Rosemount Viaduct.
