Knockout concept at KnockburnLittle more six months work started, the conferencing and training venue at Knockburn Loch on Deeside has been completed and is about to open. It took just two weeks to put up the glulam frame of the wooden building and even that was completed in some of the worst winter weather Scotland has seen in living memory. Glulam is a type of structural timber product composed of several layers of dimensioned timber bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant adhesive. By laminating several smaller pieces of timber, a single large, strong, structural member is manufactured from smaller pieces. These structural members are used as vertical columns or horizontal beams, as well as curved, arched shapes. In fact, glulam is the only engineered wood product that can be produced in curved shapes, offering unlimited design flexibility, a type of structural timber product composed of several layers of dimensioned timber bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant adhesive. These structural members are used as vertical columns or horizontal beams, as well as curved, arched shapes. In fact, glulam is the only engineered wood product that can be produced in curved shapes, offering unlimited design flexibility which was essential for the Knockburn Loch project, the vision of local businessman Bert McIntosh who collaborated with Aberdeen-base Core Structures on the building. The result is a timber clad building which will be used as a conference facility and venue for corporate business events. The largest room, double height and with windows around three sides and views across the man-made Knockburn Lock to Kerloch Hill, is flexible and can be used in many layouts. Because of the glulam construction there are no internal supports sprouting upwards from the floor and everywhere the wood finishes are sympathetic to the rural setting. There is also a commercial kitchen opening onto a break out area. It is hoped the new facility will make Knockburn Sports Loch an even more attractive venue to corporate bookers and sports enthusiasts. Already trail biking, raft building, sailing, kayaking and canoeing and cross country running are available on the shores of Scotland’s only purpose-built open-water triathlon loch. 243 views
