Last Places Available at Army Chief Leadership Lecture

General Officer Commanding 2nd Division and Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Major General David Shaw, is set to deliver the latest in a series of leadership lectures, hosted by Robert Gordon University on Wednesday 6 April. The last remaining places at the event are currently available.

Entitled, 'Contemporary Leadership - An Insight into Leadership across Different Sectors', Maj. Gen. Shaw's lecture will expose the differences and similarities, in the application of contemporary leadership across a number of organisational settings.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be based on interviews that Maj. Gen. Shaw has had with numerous influential people, such as the Chief of the Defence Staff, the Master of Wellington College and leaders in the oil and gas industry. The Major General will also share his own experience of leading organisations in the Army over the past 36 years.

Maj. Gen. Shaw, who was born and brought up in Sri Lanka, was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1976. He went on to become an instructor at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and has served in Germany, Cyprus, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong and Kenya, as well as all over the UK.

He also served as the Army's Director of Media and Communication at Headquarters Land Forces in Wiltshire before assuming his post as Governor of Edinburgh Castle in October 2009.

Currently based in Edinburgh, he heads the Army in Scotland, Northern Ireland and North of England, commanding the largest regional forces division in the UK from his base at Craigiehall Barracks, with 25,000 troops in his area.

Maj. Gen. Shaw provides direction and support to full and part-time (Territorial

Army) soldiers and their dependants, enabling the Army to conduct operations successfully. Some of the activities in which he is involved include preparing troops to deploy on operations, reacting to calls for assistance from Civil Authorities, managing Army infrastructure and coordinating medical and welfare support. He is also charged with engaging the community to sustain their support for the Army.

The leadership lecture is the latest in a series of high profile lectures organised by Robert Gordon University, with previous speakers including Colonel Bob Stewart, Richard Lambert, Edi Stark, Lord John Thomas Alderdice and most recently, Baroness Caroline Cox.

Maj. Gen. Shaw says, "I am delighted to have been approached to deliver this lecture. To my mind, the essence of leadership has not changed over centuries.

Instead, it is the environment in which we live and work that has changed and may affect the application of leadership."

The Lecture will take place at Robert Gordon University's Faculty of Health and Social Care, Garthdee Road, on Wednesday 6 April at 6pm followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to meet Major General David Shaw.
