Latin America: Opportunities and Risks

Latin America is widely recognised as comprising some of the oil and gas sector’s most promising markets. Countries such as Brazil and Colombia in particular have begun to show enormous potential as the conditions for long-term productive investment in their energy industries are established.

The reduction of government regulation and intervention coupled with a growth in private investment, improvements in the standard of education and the reliability of regulatory frameworks means that foreign interest in the region has grown considerably. Nevertheless, the security environment has not managed to keep pace with the economies of many of these countries, with kidnapping constituting among the most significant risks to energy personnel operating in the region.
