Laura graduates to Magma Products

Expanding oil and gas engineering consultancy Magma Products is boosting its workforce and helping one young graduate break into the oil business.

The Aberdeen-based company, which specialises in commissioning and start-up, is entering a period of rapid growth and has recruited management graduate Laura Black to assist its business development drive.

The 22-year-old, who only receives her degree from the Robert Gordon University this month (July), is already part of the team at Magma and relishing the opportunity to get a foothold in the industry that many aspire to join.

She is one of the lucky ones who have secured employment in a field relevant to her degree and believes the focus of her university course was instrumental in helping her access a career in the energy industry.

“Aberdeen is geared towards the oil industry and, although we covered a wide range of subjects, many of them were relevant to working in the energy sector.

“This post at Magma Products is a perfect fit. It’s a great opportunity to come in and learn about the business and there is plenty of room for growth in the role,” said Laura. “I really wanted to be in a job where I had the chance to build a career, to progress and grow with the business and this is an excellent position.”

Laura, of Portlethen, already had considerable work experience under her belt and recommends other young business hopefuls get as much as possible to enhance their chances on the jobs market when their studies are over.

She spent her third year of university at Walt Disney World in Florida which, though it might seem a quantum leap from the oil industry, equipped her with valuable transferable skills, including a keen awareness of safety aspects in business plus knowledge of marketing, retail and communications.

“You need to grasp all the experience that you can, even if it does not appear to be related to what you eventually want to do – all of it can be relevant to a career in the future.”
